Mug or stein
A handled mug keeps the beer cold longer because the hand is not on the glass, and it reads as a keepsake rather than barware. The 15 oz rim base mug, the 16 oz starburst tankard and the 15 oz Maritime mug are the bar-standard shapes. The 25 oz tavern mug is the tall sports mug with a thumb grip.
The Oktoberfest steins are the traditional dimpled shape with a thick handle. The half-liter stein is the everyday size; the one-liter stein is the one people take home from a beer festival.
Weddings, festivals and brewery merch
The 12 oz groomsmen mug is a common wedding party gift with names on each mug. Breweries use steins and tankards as merchandise and mug club glassware, and Oktoberfest events order the liter stein as the festival glass. Most mugs come in clear or with a colored base.
